Octane

If you have seen some of the advertisements for gasoline, you have probably come to believe that the higher the octane rated gasoline you use, the better it is for your vehicle. The actual result be can quite the opposite. While higher octane fuel is often recommended for high performance cars, the vast majority of vehicles will run best on 87 octane fuel. High octane fuels help prevent spark knock or “pinging” in high performance engines by burning more slowly. Now in engines not designed to run on high octane fuels the use of these premium fuels can cause cold start driveability problems. Attempts to start a cold engine with high octane fuel can be like trying to start a fire with a log rather than kindling. Using a fuel with a higher octane rating can also lead to accelerated build up of carbon deposits in your combustion chamber, yet another disadvantage. Virtually all major brand fuels of all octane ratings have additives to help keep fuel injectors clean. Using the correct grade of fuel will help your vehicle to perform at its best and can save you money too!! If you are in doubt about which fuel to use, refer to your owner’s manual or just give us a call.
